What is Discipleship?

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
— Matthew 28:19-20

Making disciples is one of the primary functions of the church. Jesus commanded his followers this “Great Commission” before he ascended back to Heaven, and the Church, from its birth, moved on this task with laser focus.

But what is a disciple?

A Disciple is someone who knows and obeys Jesus
and His teachings.

Growing in Purpose

Making disciples who make disciples.

Growing in Obedience

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’”

Growing in Vibrancy

Experience the transforming work of the Holy Spirit in a believer's life.

And so discipleship is the process and journey of growth for followers of Jesus. It is a learning journey taken in a church community (i.e. mentors and fellow disciples), with a purpose and a goal, and with discipline and commitment. It is a journey where you move with purpose.

This journey can be done one-on-one or in a pod of 2-3 of those whom you want to pursue this journey with.

What does your Journey look like?

Everyone’s discipleship journey is different, and discipleship happens in all our ministries, but our church also wants to make disciples intentionally!

Our discipleship ministry is an intentional framework for each disciple to grow with a personalized plan and purpose. Imagine our framework like the framing of a house. The church provides the frame, but the disciple and the mentor/coach fill in the walls, design, and material.

There are two pieces to the frame:

With your community

  • The church community is central to any discipleship journey. We ask our mentor and mentee to include the communal life of the church in their journey. This means encouragement to attend our regular prayer meetings, life groups, and corporate worship.

With your coach/mentor

  • You and your mentor/coach will plan your discipleship journey with clear learning goals and timelines. (Your mentor will provide guidelines and a template for your plan)

  • You will meet with your mentor at least once a month (Preferably weekly/biweekly). It can be with a coffee, a meal, a prayer meeting, a retreat, bike rides, or other settings.

  • Once your goal is met, usually within 3-6 months, you can continue with a new goal or end the journey with your mentor/coach.
