Why did you enter full time ministry?
I entered ministry when I was 21 years old. A big factor in me going into the ministry was a praying mom who ask God for one of her sons to enter the ministry and I was to be the one!
Why do you feel called to this church and how do you plan to help SCCEFC?
I feel called to lead the English church at this time to lead people into a deeper walk with God. A second reason, would be to help create an environment, where newcomers would feel accepted and embraced, and where they could feel comfortable and seeking truth about God.
What is your vision of the future for our church?
The vision I have for this church is simple: “To know God and make him known.”
Credentials!
I have been in the ministry for 40 years and have served in a variety of healthy churches. I possess a Masters of Arts in Religion, which I obtained from Ambrose University formerly known as Canadian Theological Seminary. My roles have included that of Youth ministry, Sr. Associate pastor and have been Lead Pastor in 3 Churches.
I have been an ordained Pastor since 1986. One of my joys has been officiating in over 200 marriage ceremonies!
What are you interests outside of Pastoring?
…family, playing and watching hockey, drums, walking my dog - Jax, looking at motorbikes/cars!
Why did you enter full time ministry?
I followed God's calling to full time ministry out of my love for the local church to be a place where Jesus is known and made known.
Why do you feel called to this church, at this time, and how do you plan to help SCCEFC?
I feel called to this church because a multi-congregational church like ours has a unique, challenging, and beautiful context. My plan isn't really a plan at all, but a desire to be first and foremost living into my identity as a beloved child of God. I pray that out of this identity, I can model and guide our students, leaders and members of our church.
What is your vision of the future for SCCEFC? Where would you like to take our church family?
My vision for the church is that we would not be a people of preferences but a people of priority. I pray that the guiding principle is Jesus' words for all believers: Love God and love people.
Credentials!
BA from University of British Columbia, M. Div from Ambrose Seminary. Before seminary, I worked at a business software company, SAP, and also in a business development role in a food production company, which also happened to be our family business! After a formative season in seminary, I've had the privilege of pastoring at South E free since 2017 and it has been such a gift and honour to walk alongside so many students as they explore their faith and grow in the Lord.
Free time
I love playing sports and competition (some might say a little too much!). I enjoy playing music and am passionate about worship. Praying and reading stills my soul. I get infinite cuddles from our Australian labradoodle, Letty. I am blessed beyond measure by my wonderfully silly and loving wife, Louise.
Why did you enter full time ministry?
I felt God's calling on me to enter full time ministry when I was still a teenager. But then I spent more than 10 years clarifying and crystallizing that calling. I used to be a social worker for almost 3 years after I graduated from the university. In my professional career, I found dissatisfaction with only helping people for fulfilling tangible needs, like getting a house or government's subsidy, while neglecting the deepest needs in their souls. Hence I revisited the calling that I got from my teenage years, and then I shared it with my pastors and counsellors. They prayed with me and prayed for me. After one more year, all of us were sure about the calling from God on me. Then I enrolled at the Alliance Bible Seminary, Hong Kong, in the year of 2000 to equip myself with their M.Div program. I graduated there in 2003. Since then I have been ministering in local churches until now. Time flies! This year of 2023 is my 20th anniversary of full time ministry. What I can say is grace and grace alone.
Why do you feel called to this church, at this time, and how do you plan to help SCCEFC?
I didn't know about Calgary nor SCCEFC before I applied for the pastoral position here. But the first time I made a visit to SCCEFC and spent a week with the folks there in the year of 2020, I was touched by their love and I also felt that the brothers and sisters here were like sheep without a shepherd. Thereafter God opened every door for me and for my family to come to this church: the congregations voted for offering me the lead pastor position serving in the Cantonese side, we could sell our apartment in Hong Kong under the high COVID season, the application of my work permit in Canada, and finding a good Christian school for my son, etc. I truly believe that it is God who entrusts SCCEFC to me! In hindsight, I felt that God put me here to help the church to tackle the immigration tide right before the Canadian government launched the Lifeboat Scheme for the Hong Kong people in the mid of 2021.
What is your vision of the future for SCCEFC? Where would you like to take our church family?
During a worship service, I pledged my dream for SCCEFC to God. I prayed that SCCEFC will grow into a multiethnic and cross generational church. At that time, we do not limit our scope to Chinese people or people with some Chinese backgrounds, but we can let other people become a part of our community, like a rehearsal for the worship around His throne mentioned in the Book of Revelation. At that time, the teenagers will sing along with the aged, while the adults will nurture the young kids. So the passing on of the batons won't be an empty slogan anymore.
What do you like to do for fun?
I like reading, listening to music, and watching Korean dramas ;)

Why did you enter full time ministry?
Before entering full time ministry, I had been serving in multiple roles inside and outside of church: such as outreach, evangelism, caring, short term mission, Sunday school, fellowship, deacon board. In response to an alter call, Rochelle andI started our journey towards full time ministry, and I entered Ambrose Seminary in Sep 2014. We are very clear about His calling: (John 21: 15-18) “Feed my lambs.” and (Matthew 9:37-38) “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
Why do you feel called to this church, at this time, and how do you plan to help SCCEFC?
I am very clear that it is God, who guided our family to SCCEFC. God opened the door for me to SCCEFC, through my seminary internship assignment back to 2017. During the internship, we had built a strong bond of love and trust with the congregations, the pastoral and admin staff, and the lay leaders. With lots of prayers, fellowship, sharing and discussions, both our family and the church were moved by the calling, which was confirmed by a very smooth pastoral search process. The endless support and love from the church to our family, and my heart of serving God by pastoring in SCCEFC are unchanged and the same as day one back to 2019 when I was called to this pastor role. Praise to God in the highest! The church has always been a blessing to my ministry and my family. 2023 is my 4th year as a pastor at SCCEFC, and I am planning to dedicate more time to prayer, caring, preaching, disciple-making, team building, and nurturing lay leaders. I continue to pray that Holy Spirit will humble me, lead me, empower me, and bless me to be a faithful servant, a wise leader, a good team-player, and ultimately a true blessing to the church.
What is your vision of the future for SCCEFC? Where would you like to take our church family?
The church’s vision is my vision: growing deep in Christ, reaching beyond our walls, and making disciples of this generation and the next.
Let me put it in a picture:
A Tree planted by the stream of water (Psalm 1)
Deeper Spiritual Life in Christ: Soaking in the Word of God, filled with the Holy Spirit, and everything is about and for Christ.
Fruitful Christian Witness: Live simple but abundant Christ-Centered life and love the Church while care about the World.
Grow a tree to a forest: Bring people to Christ, making them disciples, train and equip the future leaders, multiply, and reproduce a healthy tree to a healthy forest for Christ.

Tell us a little bit about yourself
My wife Rochelle and I have been living in Calgary for almost 20 years. We have 3 lovely children: Noah, Crystal, and Bridgette. I have LOTS of hobbies, such as all kind of sports, travel, outdoor, woodworking, movie, and reading. And I am still eager to learn more new things, especially all kind of new technologies.
Why did you enter full time ministry?
I see that there are too many broken lives in this world, and the ravages of sin on people’s bodies and minds, affecting both individuals and relationships. I want to help people rebuild their lives and help people return to the beautiful state when God originally created them: to be at peace with God, with people, and with nature.
Why do you feel called to this church, at this time, and how do you plan to help SCCEFC?
SCCEFC welcomed a group of Hong Kong people under the current wave of immigrants. In the past two years, the number has been doubled. Among them, there are many young parents with their young children. Their families have moved to Canada to settle down and look for churches. I hope to walking with the new immigrant parents. Since they have to take care both of their parents and young children, I hope the church can provide helps, teach the truth, share the journey together, and learn how to take on different roles in life. Let their family become a safe haven and a platform to love and be loved!
What is your vision of the future for SCCEFC? Where would you like to take our church family?
One day, SCCEFC will become a even more stronger church! Let’s imagine this: the entire congregation looks like a map, in the south side of Calgary. There are many shining red dots on the map, and each red dot represents some believers who are growing healthy. These red dots change from dots to lines, and lines to surfaces, connecting the entire group, like one body, serving God, serving the community, and witnessing Christ! I hope I am among them, helping to build and lay the foundation, so that SCCEFC is like a shining light in Calagry.

Why did you enter full time ministry?
In 2010, when I was preparing to enter graduate school to receive professional training related to radiation therapy, God put a very clear idea into my mind, and I was sure that it was God calling me to enter full-time ministry. He said to me: "The path you are going now, you will regret in the future. Now, I will lead you to walk a path that you will never regret!" Because of God's calling, I began to seriously consider whether to enter full-time ministry work or not. After months of seeking and praying, the call to prepare myself for ministry became clearer. God also made a way for me to enter seminary and be equipped. Looking back now, I know that God was really patient and He took a long time to prepare me to answer this call, which included using my wife to pray for me persistently. At a special church meeting in 2005, the speaker challenged the wives to pray for their husbands, encouraging them to cry out to God, "Lord, use my husband." My wife was deeply moved and began to pray for me. After five years of prayer, God responded to her call and changed my mind in an instant, making me willing to let go of everything and walk the path of service.
Why do you feel called to this church, at this time, and how do you plan to help SCCEFC?
After entering SCCEFC, I feel more and more that our Church, especially the mandarin congregation, is a God-loving group specially prepared by God for me, so that I can serve and grow together with them. The brothers and sisters in the mandarin congregation share many similar life experiences as me. Most of the people in the congregation, like me, have experienced the hardships of settling their lives in a foreign country, the reversal of faith from atheism to believing in God, and struggle to break our old self and rebuild. These similar experiences made me cherish the group of fellow believers that God placed around me, and also inspired me to continue learning how to use life to influence life, to strive to make myself a blessing to others, and to learn how to encourage brothers and sisters to live in God. Also to take root in the word of God, commit to Christianity, participate in service enthusiastically, treat each other with kindness, and move forward hand in hand and heart to heart with the congregation.
What is your vision of the future for SCCEFC? Where would you like to take our church family?
My prayer before the Lord is to ask Him to be gracious to our church, and to build us into a Godly group that loves the Bible, is faithful, serves enthusiastically, loves each other sincerely, preaches the gospel bravely, and can glorify God and bless the society.

As an architect, I worked hard in the industry for nearly ten years. I also worked part-time in a Chinese restaurant, as a waiter, and a food delivery. Later, I re-entered school to major in biology, determined to become an expert in treating cancer. However, I was called by God to enter a seminary belonging to the Southern Baptist Church in Kansas City, USA, to receive theological training and obtain a master's degree in divinity. While studying in the seminary, I served in a local Chinese church, and also had the opportunity to lead college student fellowships on different university campuses. In 2005, I joined SCCEFC and began to serve full-time. I am one of the pastors of the Mandarin congregation.
What are you interests outside of pastoring?
I enjoy biking, skiing, playing the guitar, gardening, and enjoying camping in the mountains with my family every summer. I will choose travelling with my family when we have the time. The places I want to go most are Israel and Turkey. Of course, traveling in Canada is also a good option. A few years ago, I fell in love with reading classic literary masterpieces, and would read a bit every night before going to bed. In the past few years, I have read many excellent works by famous authors. Among them, Dostoevsky is my favorite writer. I enjoy all of his works beyond measures.
Why did you enter full time ministry?
God called me early after I graduated university to consider serving Him with the teaching skills I had just learned. Even though teaching kids math, language arts, social studies, etc. is important, I realized that the most important thing I could teach was to lead kids to follow Jesus. What a privilege it is to be a part of a kid's journey to follow Jesus at a young age!
Why do you feel called to this church and how do you plan to help SCCEFC?
It's been amazing to see how kids have connected to Jesus and to our church community here at SCCEFC. My passion has always been to make our kids' community to be a place where they feel that they are known - known by God and known by their leaders and teachers. It can be a challenge when there are so many kids in the ministry, but I hope to always remind our leaders to connect to their few (small groups) and make following Jesus fun and personal.
What is your vision of the future for our church?
I hope that SCCEFC can be a place where children are lovingly invited to follow Christ and where they love to be with their family, friends and teachers. As they go through the ups and downs of life, we hope that they will receive guidance through the lessons of truth we teach from the Bible and through talking with their parents and their trusted leaders and teachers.
What do you like to do in your free time!
I enjoy reading mystery novels from Agatha Christie, going to see shows at our local theatres, especially mystery plays at Vertigo, and playing an online game called Hearthstone with others at SCCEFC.
Why did you enter full time ministry?
I have a child with a disability. Our family has been supported, loved and blessed in SCCEFC for many years. I want to pass the love and support individuals with special needs and their families, making them feel accepted, loved, and supported.
Why do you feel called to this church and how do you plan to help SCCEFC?
SCCEFC is our home church. It is where I got to know God and have a changed life. I hope to help SCCEFC continue to be a place for individuals with special needs to learn about and grow in the Lord in the best way they can, for their families to connect to God and grow spiritually in our church community, for our church members to serve special needs families and pass God’s love.
What is your vision of the future for our church?
The vision of Special Needs Ministry is: SCCEFC will be a place where individuals with special needs and their families receive spiritual care, love, and acceptance.
The SN Ministry will help foster the mental, emotional, and spiritual health of individuals with special needs and their families, minimize barriers for them to access programs and support, and continue advocacy for them to receive ongoing care and resources.
What are some of your interests?
I like gardening and I'm a spicy food lover!
