Advent Wreath Craft

The Advent season is upon us! Have your kiddos make their own wreath!

Materials:

  • 1 big biscuit size shredded wheat

  • white glue

  • green food coloring

  • glitter

Steps: Break apart the shredded wheat biscuit into tiny pieces on a plate. Mix white glue with green food coloring in a separate bowl. Use a generous amount of glue - we used half a styrofoam cup of white glue for one wreath! Stir the glue and food coloring together. Once it’s mixed, you can pour the glue on top of the tiny bits of shredded wheat. Use your hands and mix it together. The bits should be coated with the glue mixture. If you need more glue, just make some more in your bowl. Once mixed it make a ball. Press it down into a flat pancake on a piece of tin foil, wax paper or parchment paper. Form a circle shape. Sprinkle with glitter and sparkles. Add the candles and let it dry!

Glory Counsellor with her dog Poppy

Wow you’re a Glory/Shine/Jireh counselor!  How did this happen?!

I've been teaching Children's Sunday school for so many years and was feeling tired, so, I had taken a break from teaching but in the past year I felt God tugging my heart to come back to teaching but in a different capacity. I have always loved working with youth especially within my career, so I felt drawn to serving the junior high youth in our church.

What do you love about serving in youth ministry so far?  Do you have a vision?

I love being able to share the challenges that I have had as a young person, and use that to encourage the youth within Glory. I love that I can be a supportive presence for these youth because Junior high is a difficult time. My vision or my hopes is that, despite the pandemic, as time goes on, the youth can see us counsellors, most importantly, their fellowship, as a place of safety. A place they can feel safe exploring their faith.

What is it like serving with your teammates and Adriel?

In a way it feels like family, well Adriel is family but in this short time span of serving with this team, I have the assurance that I can lean on this group of people. It's lovely knowing that people have your back and are willing to pray with you.

What was the last book you read? or show/movie you streamed/watched?

The last book I read is called The Deep by Nick Cutter. I'm currently obsessed with horror novels. I'm currently reading Radical: Taking back your Faith from the American Dream by David Platt.

What’s an interesting factoid/fun fact about you?

I love collecting framed insects!

Wow you’re a Glory/Shine/Jireh counselor!  How did this happen?!

My husband, Jeff, was serving in Teens Sunday School and I was looking for an opportunity to serve with him. So I decided to try being a group leader for Teens Sunday School, which worked out well because I was able to work with the leader for the High School girls group at the time, as she was preparing for her upcoming mat leave.

How long have you been at sccefc and how long have you been serving in youth?

I’ve been at SCCEFC since about 2007 after moving to Calgary the year before. I started serving in Teens Sunday School in 2013.

What do you love about serving in youth ministry so far?  Do you have a vision?

I love that I’ve been able to serve alongside my husband - there’s nothing like coming up with a lesson plan with your spouse and bouncing ideas off each other! I also love getting to know the teens and learning about what’s on their minds and I get really pumped when they’re able to open up about their faith and their struggles.

I don’t really have a “vision” per se - I plan to keep serving until I believe God is calling me elsewhere.

What is it like serving with your teammates and Adriel?

I really appreciate the other leaders I serve with - some of us have been serving together for many years! It’s such a team effort and I truly feel that we’ve got each other’s backs. Our fearless leader, Adriel, has been a true God-send. I love his energy, approachability, vision, leadership, taste in (fur)baby names, and undeniable love for God.

What is it about being a youth counselor you find challenging?

The most challenging aspect for me is knowing how to best connect with the teens through the lesson. How can I make the lesson or truth real to them? What examples will resonate? Will they think this joke is funny? All these questions aside, I’ve found most teens (and adults!) simply want to be seen and understood so the small group time has turned out to be the most valuable.

What was your youth group experience at sccefc like?  Or do you have a fun or impressing memory from youth group?  How long ago was that?

I didn’t get the chance to attend SCCEFC as a youth! Though from what I’ve experienced as a leader, I’ve seen long-lasting connections between leaders and previous students, which says a lot. It’s so cool to see how thrilled leaders are when the youth and young adults they’ve taught start serving in youth/YA ministry today.

What was the last book you read? or show/movie you streamed/watched?

I just watched Shang Chi and No Time to Die and realized how much I’ve missed going to a movie theatre and theatre popcorn!

What do you do when you’re not counseling?

I’m currently on mat leave for my second baby, Letty,  and will be returning to my job as an Information Management Lead next month.

What’s an interesting factoid/fun fact about you?

Though I’m not a strong swimmer - I remember being petrified of the water at my first swimming lesson as a kid - Ironically, I saved my younger brother from drowning at a hotel pool when we were kids.

How has the pandemic been for you.

The pandemic has been a mix of challenges and many silver linings. It was tough adjusting to life working from home while also caring for a preschooler all day. And it was hard not being able to see or hug friends in person. But I’m so thankful for becoming a mom for the second time and for not having to commute to work while pregnant! And the lockdowns have alleviated any FOMO I may have felt being at home with a newborn because everyone else was also at home. Zoom has allowed us to stay connected with our life group each week and host virtual birthday parties with family and friends.

What is one of your most embarrassing moments?

I remember slipping and falling in front of Jeff and his cool design classmates in university. Face palm moment for sure. Avoid wearing flip flops on a slippery cement floor!

What else do you want to say?  The floor is yours!

If you think God is calling you to serve in youth/YA ministry but are on the fence because you don’t feel “ready” or “qualified”, let me encourage you by saying you don’t need to know all the answers, you will learn along the way, from God, the youth and the leaders. I’d say the most important “qualification” is to be a good listener.

Wow you’re a Glory / Shine / Jireh counselor! How did this happen?!

In summer of 2018, Jeff Deleon had asked if I was interested in serving in Jireh after service one Sunday and I did not think it was time yet. However, over the course of the next week, I just felt a pulling to reconsider and reminiscing more and more of my time in Jireh and how formative they were to my walk with God. Putting what little pride I had aside, I asked if Jeff would reconsider chatting about Jireh (thanks for saying yes Jeff). After learning that Auntie Amy and Louise were also thinking of jumping on board at a dinner at Migarock, it was a no-brainer for me as well.

How long have you been at SCCEFC and how long have you been serving in youth?

I have been at SCCEFC since August of 2008 and actually Jireh (and the people in Jireh) was one of the pivotal parts of our church that has really made me feel blessed to be part of this community. In my last year of University, I had served on committee on a daily basis (I’m not kidding, there were some weeks where I think our committee was at church every single weeknight) and this will be my third year serving as a counselor.

What do you love about serving in youth ministry so far? Do you have a vision?

The obvious answer here is that you get to walk through life with a wonderful group of young adults and trust me, that part is true and I love every single part of that but also encouraged with all of the things we get to do together and the conversations that we have as a fellowship. Our vision as Jireh is to provide an environment where we can grow in our faith thru Scripture, serving, being in a growing community, even our “casual conversations” nights.

What is it like serving with your teammates and Adriel?

Incredibly fun and rewarding. With Auntie Amy, Louise and Adriel, we all bring something different to the table and we compliment each other very well but it has also been a journey of supporting each other, trying new things, sharing struggles, celebrating joys, etc. Our planning days/nights rarely feel tedious…right guys?

What is it about being a youth counselor you find challenging?

I think one of the challenges is always finding that balance between providing guidance/counsel but also allowing space for spiritual growth and the opportunity for the fellowship to do what they want. It’s always a challenge to let things develop within the fellowship and let people grow but making sure I remain present, supportive, encouraging, etc.

What was the last book you read? Or show/movie you streamed/watched?

Honestly, the last time I read a book cover to cover, I don’t think I had my license yet so I don’t even remember which book that was. I just restarted “The Last Dance”, the Michael Jordan miniseries, for the fourth time…I know, a bit embarrassing…but it’s so good…

What do you do when you’re not counseling?

In the summer months, I have been biking quite a lot. Especially around Canmore with all the highway closures or around the Springbank area. Biking has been quite a great way to get away from things and be able to just pause your mind (as I’m zipping 70 downhill or my heart pounding like a metronome on steroids up the biggest incline of your life). During the winter months, bouldering has been a go-to activity. There are always interesting projects at the local gyms and the blend of physical / mental aspects of that sport has always intrigued me!

What’s an interesting factoid/fun fact about you?

I can’t swim and I panic so hard if I’m in water BUT I LOVE WATER SPORTS as long as I guarantee 100% safety…and survival.

How has the pandemic been for you?

Hard. But I have learned a lot about myself and certainly learned a lot about who God is. God needs to my rock, my foundation, my king, my Father and boy has he reminded me that in the last 18 months.

What is one of your most embarrassing moments?

The first time I flew a plane back home alone (I was 15?). My dear mother, bless her soul, thought I would be hungry on the plane ride from Los Angeles back to Montreal so she packed a canned of instant congee into my carry-on (I think it was more that she did not want me to go spend money at the airport restaurants). After my bag passes the security check scanner, TSA guard asks the routine, “Random check. do you have any liquids?” Me being the proud Asian Macaulay Culkin, flying alone like a big shot, smiles ear to ear and shakes my head. With the coldest stare back (and never losing eye contact with me), she reaches into my bag and pulls out the can of congee which was 3.5 times the 100ml limit. I thought I was going to be sentenced to life to a maximum-security penitentiary with no chance of parole.

What else do you want to say? The floor is yours!

Someone in the Jireh whatsapp group chat, please change the profile pic so that it’s not my face. Just kidding not really. To all of you in Jireh, I cherish each and every one of you, thankful to be alongside those who have been there so far in the last 3 years, you have been what makes Friday nights fun and exciting and something to look forward to and to those who just joined this year, excited to see you grow abundantly in loving and knowing God more in the next couple of years.
